Music Video vs Promotion Video

July 4, 2013

Music Video vs Promotion Video Just about anything has a video these days, and neither is it a surprise. Video appeals .  Actually, that should be rephrased; a good video is appealing . Mashable recently reported this; This Is The Future of Book Marketing .  Basically, books too now have a promotional video.  Here is an example: This shouldn’t be a foreign idea to anyone in the music business.  It’s been done with music videos ever since the invention of the television pretty much you say. But do you notice the difference here?  Music videos don’t tease.  They tell the same exact story as the final audio product.  We need to differentiate the “music video” to the “promotion video” ; two terms that are used synonymously in Japan.  What’s the difference, you ask?  Let’s go to the video. Here is Jay-Z and Samsung teasing with a promotional video. Here is the most successful music video of all time (as of now). Putting these two videos side by side may raise eyebrows, but between these 2 artists, which of them was able to effectively sell a product and generate millions in revenue even before releasing the entire product?  You already know the rest of this story . Again, my point isn’t to compare the two artists above or their videos in anyway.  But imagine if Jay-Z had PSY level success with any one of his music video from his coming new album.  That would be #newrules all over again. by Taishi Fukuyama ( @ tshfkym ) Happy #4thofJuly! and don’t for get to like us on facebook and follow on twitter !
